Toby the tortoise lived in a quiet pond, shaded by tall reeds and whispering trees. But though the pond was peaceful, Toby often felt restless.
“I’ve lived here my whole life,” he said one morning. “But I want to see the world beyond this water. I want adventure!”
Two ducks, Dilly and Dally, who often visited the pond, heard his wish.
“We can help,” said Dilly kindly. “But it’s risky.”
“We’ll fly you across the sky,” added Dally. “You’ll hold a stick in your mouth while we carry the ends with our beaks. But whatever happens, you must not open your mouth. Or you’ll fall.”
Toby nodded, his eyes sparkling with excitement. “I promise! I won’t say a word.”
The next morning, the ducks brought a sturdy stick. Toby clamped his mouth on the middle. With powerful flaps, Dilly and Dally lifted him into the air.
Whoosh! The wind rushed past his face. Below, fields, rivers, and forests rolled by like a painting come to life. Toby’s heart swelled with joy.
But as they flew over a town, voices rose from below.
“Ha! Look at that silly tortoise!” someone shouted. “He thinks he can fly like a bird!” laughed another.
Toby’s joy twisted into anger. He immediately shouted, “I am flying! I’m not silly, I’m brave!” He forgot the warning and immediately opened his mouth.
The stick slipped from his jaws, and before he could blink, he was tumbling through the air. Down, down, down he fell.
CRACK! He landed hard on a rocky path outside the town. His shell broke in places, and everything hurt. Dilly and Dally landed nearby, wide-eyed and flapping.
“Toby!” cried Dilly. “You’re alive!”
But Toby didn’t answer. He just groaned. Toby didn’t die that day. But he was badly hurt. His shell had to heal slowly, over many seasons. The ducks stayed with him as long as they could, bringing him berries and keeping him company. Eventually, they had to move on, but they promised to return.

Toby recovered, little by little. But he never walked quite the same again. His steps were slower now, and his legs ached when it rained. Still, he found his way back to the pond.
The other animals gathered around to hear his tale. He told them about the clouds, the rivers from above, the feeling of soaring like a leaf on the wind.
And he told them how one angry moment, one word too many, nearly cost him everything.
Moral: think before you speak. Pride can bring you down, but strength is rising again after you fall.
