Once upon a time, there was a prince who wanted to marry a princess. But she couldn’t be just any princess: she had to be a real princess. The prince travelled all around the world twice to find the right one. He met many princesses, but there was always something that wasn’t quite right. Some were not very kind, others were too proud, and none of them seemed to be exactly what he was looking for.
After searching for so long, the prince returned home, feeling very sad. He hadn’t found a real princess to marry, and he was worried that he never would. He wanted someone who was kind, gentle, and special, not just a princess by name.
One evening, while he was at the palace, a terrible storm began. The sky turned black, and it started to thunder and rain very hard. The wind was howling, and everyone was inside the palace, staying warm. Suddenly, there was a loud knock on the door. The prince went to answer it himself, and when he opened the door, he saw a girl standing there. She was soaking wet from the rain, her clothes were dripping, and her hair was hanging down, all wet and messy.
“I’m a princess,” she said. She looked tired and cold, but there was something about her that made the prince believe her. He decided to let her in, gave her dry clothes, and made sure she was warm. The prince’s mother, the queen, saw the girl and was curious. She wondered if this girl was really a true princess.
The queen had an idea. She wanted to test the girl to see if she was a real princess. She knew that a real princess was very sensitive and could feel things that other people couldn’t. So the queen went to the guest bedroom and took off all the blankets and sheets from the bed. Then she put three small peas on the bed frame. On top of the peas, she put twenty soft mattresses and twenty fluffy blankets. The bed was so tall it looked like a tower!

The girl was brought to her room, and when she saw the huge bed, she didn’t say anything. She was too polite to ask why the bed was so high. She climbed up to the top of the bed and lay down to sleep. But during the night, she couldn’t sleep at all. No matter what she did, she felt something hard and uncomfortable underneath her. It made her back hurt, and she tossed and turned all night long. She barely slept at all.
The next morning, the queen and the prince asked her how she had slept.
“Oh, it was terrible,” the girl said. “I hardly slept at all. There was something hard in the bed, and now I feel all bruised and sore.”
The queen smiled, and the prince’s face lit up. They knew she had to be a real princess! Only a true princess could feel something as small as three peas under all those mattresses and blankets. It showed that she was very sensitive, kind, and special: just like a true princess should be.
The prince was so happy. He had finally found the real princess he had been searching for. She was not just beautiful, but also gentle and sensitive, and he knew she would be a kind and caring queen. Soon after, the prince and the princess got married, and the whole kingdom celebrated.
As for the three peas, they were put in a museum for everyone to see. They became famous because they helped the prince find his real princess. And if the peas haven’t turned to dust, you can still see them today!
The story of the prince and the real princess became famous in the kingdom. It reminded everyone that being a real princess is not about fancy dresses or a crown, but about having a kind heart and a gentle spirit.
