Once upon a time, in a small cottage on the edge of a quiet forest, there lived a kind old man with two very loyal dogs.
The first dog was Bailey, a tall and lean Beagle with white and brown patches and sharp eyes that could spot a rabbit from far away. He was a hunting dog: fast, clever, and full of energy.
The second dog was Gus, a sturdy German Shepherd with a thick coat, alert ears, and a deep bark. Everyone in the cottage simply called him Gus the Guard Dog, because guarding the house, the chickens, and the garden was exactly what he did, every single day.
One warm afternoon, Bailey returned home from a long hunt in the woods. His tongue was hanging out, and his paws were muddy from chasing animals through the underbrush.
That day had been busy. Just after sunrise, Bailey had followed his master deep into the forest. Birds chirped high in the trees, and the smell of moss and damp leaves filled the air. Bailey sniffed the ground and picked up the trail of a wild pheasant. He dashed through ferns and over fallen logs, pointing his nose the moment he saw the bird hiding in a bush.
BANG! The hunter fired once, and the pheasant dropped. Bailey retrieved it gently in his mouth and brought it back with his tail wagging.
Later, they tracked a pair of rabbits darting between bushes. Bailey crouched low, then barked sharply, sending the rabbits running right toward the hunter. Another quick shot, and dinner was ready.
By the time they returned home, the sun was setting, and Bailey was covered in twigs, tired but proud.
But as he trotted up the path to the house, he saw Gus lying comfortably on the porch, enjoying a juicy piece of meat.
Bailey dropped the pheasant and frowned.
“Wait a minute! You got meat too?” he asked.
Gus yawned and looked over. “Yup. The master gave it to me just now. Tasty stuff.”
Bailey’s ears drooped. “But I’ve been running through the woods all day. I sniffed, chased, tracked, and brought back dinner. You’ve just been napping in the sun!”
Gus sat up, calmly licking his paws. “I’ve been guarding the house. Watching the gate. Making sure no one sneaks into the chicken coop or steals the garden tools. It may not be as exciting as chasing rabbits, but it’s still important.”
Bailey grumbled. “It’s not fair. I do all the hard work, and you get the same reward without even breaking a sweat.”
Gus gave a slow wag of his tail and said, “Maybe it looks that way, but the master gives us food for being loyal and useful. You help him bring food in. I help keep it safe. We’re both doing our part.”
Bailey tilted his head and looked toward the little cottage, where the master was lighting a lamp in the kitchen window.
“I guess he does care about both jobs,” Bailey admitted. “I wouldn’t want to stay home all day. That’d be so boring.”
Gus chuckled. “And I wouldn’t want to chase pheasants through thorns. I’d probably trip over my own paws!”
That night, under the stars, they lay side by side on the porch, the smell of roast pheasant drifting from the kitchen. They were different. But both were loved. And both had a place in the master’s heart.
Moral of the story: everyone has a role to play. Some work in the field, some guard the home, but all work is valuable when done with loyalty and heart.
