Once upon a time, in a quiet village, there lived a man named Thomas. He wasn’t always poor, but he wasn’t honest either. Thomas was a greedy man who always wanted more than he had. He didn’t like to work hard on his farm. Instead, he spent his nights sneaking into rich men’s houses, stealing gold and treasures.
One night, Thomas crept into the grand house of a wealthy merchant who was away on a long trip. Inside the house, Thomas found piles of gold, sparkling jewels, and fine silverware. He stuffed his bag full, but just as he was leaving, something caught his eye: a goose, sitting calmly in a golden cage.
“A goose in a golden cage?” Thomas whispered. “He must be special. I’ll take him too, just because I can.”
So Thomas stole the goose and slipped away into the night.
Back home, he put the goose in a little nest and went to sleep, dreaming of his riches. But the next morning, when he checked on the goose, clink! there was a shiny golden egg in the nest!
“A golden egg?” he gasped. “This goose lays golden eggs! I’ve struck the greatest treasure of all!”
Every morning, the goose laid one perfect golden egg. Day by day, Thomas grew richer. He bought a new house, fine clothes, and even a shiny red cart to ride through town. But with each golden egg, his greed grew bigger.
“One egg a day isn’t enough,” he grumbled. “What if the goose is full of golden eggs?”
So one foolish morning, Thomas picked up the goose and whispered, “I’m sorry, but I must have it all.”
He took a knife, and, snip!, he opened the goose.
But there were no golden eggs inside. Just feathers, bones, and silence.
Thomas stared in horror. “What have I done?” he cried.
The goose was gone. The magic was gone. And no more golden eggs would ever come again.
From that day on, Thomas’s riches faded. He lost his house, his fine clothes, and even his shiny red cart. He was left with nothing but regret.
The moral of the story: greed can blind you and make you lose everything, even the greatest gift, if you always want more than you need.
