One day, T. Rex and Tarbosaurus wandered far from their home valley in search of new hunting grounds. They crossed rocky hills and steaming swamps until they reached a wide, open plain surrounded by cliffs.
“This place smells full of prey!” said T. Rex, licking his teeth. Tarbosaurus nodded. “Yes, but it’s too quiet. Almost too quiet.”
Just then, a dark shadow swept across the ground. The two cousins looked up, and froze.
Soaring high above was a giant Pteranodon, wings stretched wider than ten trees! It screeched, circling them like a hawk spotting mice.
“That thing rules the sky!” gasped T. Rex. “And it’s looking at us,” muttered Tarbosaurus.
The Pteranodon dived, its long beak snapping like a spear. The dinosaurs roared and ducked, running for cover. Pebbles flew as its wings beat the ground with powerful gusts.
“Into that cave!” shouted Tarbosaurus.
They squeezed inside just in time, as the Pteranodon’s claws scraped against the rock at the entrance. It screeched furiously, then flapped away to circle again.
The two cousins panted in the dark. “We can’t stay here forever,” said T. Rex. “I’m starving!” “Neither can I,” said Tarbosaurus. “But if we rush out, it’ll swoop down and snatch us.”
They listened to the echoing flaps outside, thinking hard. Then Tarbosaurus’s eyes glimmered. “I think I have a plan,” he whispered.
T. Rex grinned. “Another one of your tricks?” “Maybe,” Tarbosaurus said with a wink. “But this time, we’ll need both brains and brawn.”
And as the Pteranodon screeched once more above the valley, the two cousins began to prepare their clever escape.
To be continued.
