One sunny morning, Masher the megalodon and Suri the giant squid were cruising through the warm ocean when they saw something strange. A huge, silvery, ribbon-like creature was drifting oddly in the water, twisting and looping in a way that made it look thoroughly lost.
“Is that… an oarfish?” Masher blinked his big eyes. A giant oarfish was a long, ribbon-like fish with a silvery body and a bright red fin running down its back. They could grow longer than a school bus and were rarely ever seen.
Suri wiggled his tentacles. “Definitely don’t see that every day!” Giant squids are enormous creatures that live deep in the ocean. They have eight arms and two longer tentacles!
They swam closer to the oarfish, who was wiggling around awkwardly, bumping gently into a rock and then apologising to it. Oscar, a silvery oarfish, had learned to swim in the deep sea, but he wasn’t very fast at it.
“Hey! What are you doing out here?” Masher called.
The silvery oarfish turned his long head. “Oh! I’m Oscar. I was swimming with my friend Max the mosasaurus, but he swam too fast, and I lost him! Now I don’t know where to go.” A mosasaurus was a giant sea reptile that looked a bit like a crocodile with flippers. They were excellent swimmers.
Masher and Suri looked at each other. “Don’t worry, Oscar. We’ll help you find him!”
First, they asked a speedy bluefin tuna. “Hey, have you seen a mosasaurus around?” Masher asked.
The tuna flicked its tail. “Nope! Haven’t seen one!” and zoomed away, leaving nothing but a trail of bubbles.
Next, they saw a seagull flying overhead. “Hey, seagull!” Suri called. “Have you seen a big mosasaurus swimming nearby?”
The seagull squawked. “Sorry! I’m just looking for fish!” and flapped its wings, dipping down toward the water and just missing a school of anchovies.
Oscar sighed. “Now what?” He was starting to get worried. He had been following Max, but then a big wave crashed over him, and when he came up, Max was gone. Everything looked the same in the deep sea, and Oscar was confused and scared, and just a little embarrassed that he had let himself get so turned around.
Just then, they saw a bunch of tiny fish swimming really fast, like they were running from something. Suri was about to ask them if they’d seen Max when one of them shouted, “Swim away! Something’s chasing us!”
Oscar looked ahead and squinted. “Wait a second… that’s not a monster!”

Far away, a huge shape was gliding through the water, cutting a clean, swift path that sent the tiny fish scattering all over again. It was long, powerful, and super fast. It was Max!
Oscar’s face lit up. “Max! We found him!”
Masher grinned. “Or more like… he found us!”
As Max swam closer, Oscar gave a happy ripple of his long body, and the two friends splashed around excitedly. “I thought I lost you!” Oscar said.
Max chuckled. “You were just too slow! But I’m glad you’re okay.”
Max turned to Masher and Suri and gave a small, grateful nod. “Thank you both. I don’t know what I would have done if he’d stayed lost out here all day.”
Masher and Suri watched the two friends reunite. Suri nudged Masher. “Another mystery solved!”
Masher laughed. “And another adventure complete!”
As the sun set over the ocean, the four friends swam off together, ready for whatever the sea had in store for them next.
The End.
