Long, long ago, in the green mountains of China, there lived a little white bear named Pao Pao. He was the fluffiest, roundest, and shyest creature in all the land. His fur was as white as clouds. He loved to roll in the snow and nap under the bamboo trees.

But poor Pao Pao had one big problem. He was too easy to spot! Whenever he tried to hide from the playful monkeys, they always saw him coming from far away.

“Look! It’s Pao Pao the Marshmallow Bear!” the monkeys would giggle. And Pao Pao would sigh, “Oh, I just want to blend in for once!”

One day, the Great Forest held a costume festival. Every animal dressed up. The tiger painted stripes on its tail. The peacock wore extra feathers. Even the rabbits tied leaves on their ears.

Pao Pao wanted to join in, but he had no colours to wear. He looked at himself in the river and groaned. “I look like a snowball. How will I ever look cool?”

Then he had an idea. “What if I disguise myself?”

He tiptoed into a patch of dark bamboo soot left over from an old campfire. With a pawful of black dust, he began to dab and smudge. He made a little dark jacket around his shoulders. “Aha! My secret spy coat!” Then he drew two big circles around his eyes.

When he looked at his reflection, he gasped. “Oh! I look mysterious! Like a forest ninja!”

He strutted proudly into the festival. The monkeys did not recognise him. The peacock bowed and said, “Who is this elegant guest?” And the tiger nodded in approval.

Pao Pao had finally blended in!

But as he danced and played, something magical happened. The black soot would not wash off. The rain came that night. His coat turned back to white, but the dark patches around his eyes stayed.

Pao Pao blinked in surprise at his reflection. The river whispered softly, “You no longer need to hide. Those eyes tell your story now.”

From that day on, every panda born after Pao Pao had the same black patches around their eyes. It was a reminder of a very good disguise.

And every night, when the moonlight shines on the bamboo forest, you can almost hear the pandas whisper, “Don’t be afraid to stand out, or to blend in, in your own way.”
