The crew moved cautiously into the cave, their torches casting flickering shadows on the damp stone walls. Their breaths echoed in the narrow tunnel, mixing with the distant drip of water. Fear clung to them, but so did excitement: if the fossa was truly guarding something, it had to be valuable.

Deeper and deeper they went, the tunnel twisting like a serpent beneath the mountain. Just as one of the men was about to suggest turning back, a sharp gasp echoed through the cave.

“Over here!” someone whispered.

Wedged into a small hole in the wall, half-buried in dust and rock, was a treasure chest.

The crew forgot everything else.

“Treasure!” one of them shouted.

In an instant, their mission to find the fossa, and Flap, vanished from their minds.

They rushed toward the chest, clawing at the stone around it, eager to drag it free. Someone whooped with joy, another cheered loudly as they pried open the old wooden lid. Gold coins, gemstones, and strings of pearls spilled out, glittering in the torchlight. The men shouted in triumph, laughing, clapping each other on the back. Their cheers echoed through the cave, bouncing off the stone walls. They were so lost in their victory that none of them noticed the soft padding of paws on the ground behind them.

A shadow flickered. A pair of glowing yellow eyes appeared. Then another. Then a third.

The fossa had returned.

“LOOK OUT! LOOK OUT!” Flap’s screech cut through the air.

The crew spun around just in time to see three fossas crouched low, ready to pounce.

With a flash of movement, the pirates grabbed nets, ropes, and anything they could find. They moved fast, this time faster than the fossas. Within moments, the creatures were trapped, hissing and snarling in a tangled mess of rope.

Rex turned toward the cave ceiling, where Flap flapped proudly, watching over them.

“You were here all along?” Rex asked, amazed.

Flap ruffled his feathers. “Watching. Waiting.” He gave a smug little chirp. “And saving you!”

The crew cheered for Flap, the little parrot who had become their hero.

True to his word, Captain Rex kept his promise. The treasure was split fairly among the crew, and by morning, they were heading back to their ship, richer, wiser, and ready for their next adventure.

As the island faded behind them, Rex leaned against the railing, watching the waves.

“Where to next, Flap?” he asked with a grin.

Flap flapped his wings and laughed. “Somewhere with more treasure, and fewer fossas!”

The crew roared with laughter as their ship sailed into the horizon.
