Tonight, when the lights went out and the room grew quiet, the Lego box began to wiggle again.

“Ready, everyone?” whispered the little red block. “It’s race night!” cheered a yellow one.

With a flurry of clicks and snaps, the Lego pieces rushed to build themselves. This time, they weren’t dolphins or turtles. They were racing vehicles of every kind.

First came a shiny race car with a big spoiler. Then a motorbike with tiny handlebars. An excavator with a wobbly arm joined in, along with a bright ambulance and a tall fire engine.

Even the smallest Lego pieces wanted to join the fun. A few blocks clicked together into a simple flat piece with four wheels. It was nothing fancy, just fast and light.

“Where’s the race track?” asked the fire engine.

In seconds, the other Lego pieces stretched out across the room, forming a twisting, looping race course. It started at the Lego cabinet and went down the floor ramp. It zoomed under the chair, up the leg of the study table, and around the books. Then it looped back down again. It was the Lego Grand Prix of the night!

“On your marks… get set… GO!” shouted the motorbike.

The vehicles sped off with a vroooom! The race car zoomed ahead. The fire engine rumbled along. The excavator clanked noisily as its scoop wobbled. The ambulance whirred past the slippers.

But halfway up the study table ramp — CRASH! The motorbike slipped and fell apart into five little pieces. “Oops!” it giggled, as the other Lego pieces helped it rebuild itself.

Then the excavator took a sharp corner and toppled over too. The race car was fast, but too heavy. It flipped off the last bend and scattered into a pile of wheels.

Meanwhile, the little flat car with four wheels zipped quietly along the track. It didn’t have lights or sirens. It didn’t even have a roof. But it was light, steady, and quick.

Up the ramp — whoosh! Around the books — zip! Down the track — zoom!

While the others were still laughing and rebuilding themselves, the flat car rolled smoothly across the finish line.

“We have a winner!” shouted the ambulance. “The nimble one!” cheered the race car.

All the Lego vehicles honked and clapped their little plastic parts. No one was sad, because every crash came with giggles and a quick rebuild. That’s what made Lego races so much fun.

As the first light of morning crept through the window, the vehicles began to click apart, one by one, returning to the Lego box. The last piece to roll in was the little flat car, still proud of its smooth victory lap.

When Ben woke up, the study table had a tiny Lego wheel resting on the edge, almost like a wink.

And just like that, another magical Lego night came to a happy, speedy end.
