How People Learned to Boil Water
Long ago, before people knew much about cooking or heating, rivers and lakes gave them all the water they needed. But sometimes, the water carried sickness. People would drink from a stream and soon feel weak, their stomachs twisting. They could not understand why the very gift of life sometimes hurt them. One summer, the village suffered greatly. The sun baked the earth until cracks split the fields. The only stream that remained was muddy and filled with buzzing flies.
